Make the space easy to use
Protect the work surface and arrange a small selection of materials within easy reach. Set aside a place for finished work to dry, with enough room that pieces will not touch.
Choose materials intended for the participants and the activity. Follow age recommendations, supervision guidance and cleaning instructions on the packaging.
Offer a starting point, then leave room
A prompt such as “make a pattern with three colors” gives an activity direction without prescribing the result. Start with a short demonstration of the tools, then let each person explore.
Keep spare paper available for testing and encourage participants to compare their own marks and color combinations. The test sheet can become part of the discovery.
Plan the finish as carefully as the start
Reserve time to label work, set it aside and clean tools according to the product instructions. Check the care guidance before assuming a paint will wash out of a particular fabric or surface.
For repeat activities, note what materials were used and what you would adjust next time. A practical setup makes it easier to return to painting.
